Not many students get to go to school and get dirty for a majority of the class period, but Mr. Cooper’s ecology class gets that unique chance.
Mr. Cooper is teaming up with Mrs. Landers and her PROSTART students to create a garden for the students to use in their culinary creations.
“I do gardening at home and I’ve always enjoyed it, and the courtyard sold me because it’s a nice area to put a garden,” said Mr. Cooper, GHS ecology teacher.
So far the students have really enjoyed the project and have made progress with the plants. They’ve planted tomatoes, beans, chives, onions, melon, red peppers, and lettuce.
“I think it’s really fun, I like working with plants and I’m not afraid to get dirty,” said junior Audrey Barton.
Mr. Cooper wants his students to learn the science behind gardening and hopes to turn the courtyard into a community garden for all of Grandview. His main idea for this project was learning beyond the walls of Grandview High School.
The PROSTART students will get their creative juices flowing as they think of different ways to work with the different plants being grown.
Mrs. Landers’ PROSTART students will be using the various fruits and vegetables for food labs depending on what is grown in the garden. They most likely will be using the garden for units that involve just fruits and vegetables.
A community garden and delicious food are the expected outcome of this creative project.
