Grandview students had the chance to meet with New York Times and USA Today best-selling author W. Bruce Cameron on Oct. 21. He visited Gina O’Brien’s FOCUS (gifted) class inside Center for Alternative Instructional Resources (CAIR). Cameron’s sister Amy, a teacher at Grandview High School, arranged her brother’s visit.
“He supports teachers by providing copies of his novels to classrooms nationwide,” Ms. Cameron said. Two of his novels Emory’s Gift and A Dog’s Purpose are used extensively in O’Brien’s class and by English III teachers at Grandview High School. A Dog’s Purpose spent 48 weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller List and DreamWorks is developing a film adaptation. The book’s sequel, A Dog’s Journey, was also on the New York Times Best-Seller List. Another of his novels, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, was adapted for television and became a hit ABC series.
Cameron is coming to Kansas City to promote his new book, The Dogs of Christmas, with signings at Rainy Day Bookstore and Avila University and to see his sister!
During his visit at Avila GHS students got the chance to sit in and listen to him speak about his books. Amy said her brother loves bringing the joy of reading to students in Grandview and across the country and that’s why he generously donates his books, although she thinks there might be another reason.
“It’s because his sis is a teacher,” she joked.
