On April 5, Grandview High School held a mock crash in the school parking lot in the morning for juniors and seniors. A day before prom night, the mock crash was to alert the students of the risks and consequences of drunk driving. The Grandview Police and Fire Departments cooperated with the school in assisting with the help and rescue of the victims in the crash. The students were later led into the assembly where speakers talked about distracted driving, how to be safe, and showed testimonies of survivors and even examples of victims to reckless and drunk driving.
The point of the event was to get students to realize the reality of the consequences of drinking and driving. Organizers wanted to stress the message that students have the responsibility to make good choices and to keep themselves and their guests safe.
“Some of the presentations were unrealistic, but the mock crash showed what could actually happen and made me think about what I’m doing,” said senior Brianna Mitchell.
The presentation did get through to the heads of the students in some way or another, whether it was a huge or little impact.
“The one that thing the crash made me realize was to wear seatbelts,” said senior Jeremy Kinsey.
Students were educated and made to see reality. Not only for the juniors and seniors, but several underclassmen who attended.
Melissa Castillo, a freshman, said ,“It was kind of boring, but interesting and scary.”
